Sweet SFA
The transformation in Scottish football over the last 4 or 5 years has been nothing short of astounding. The national team are top of their Euro 2008 qualification group after wins over France (twice) and, today, an impressive 3-1 win over Ukraine.
It wasn’t so long ago that we were struggling to draw with the Faroe Islands and losing to Georgia. The club teams are having a good time too, with Rangers, Celtic and Aberdeen all winning against quality European opposition last week.
So where did it all go right? The Guardian has a good article on Scotland’s resurgence, citing Sky’s decision to pull out of a TV deal as the catalyst. As a result of this, clubs abandoned their habit of recruiting highly paid (but averagely talented) foreigners, and opted for younger home-bred talent.
Whatever the reason, it’s great to watch the team restoring some pride to the country. We might have to learn how to drink to success instead of drowning our sorrows...
