Wait for Leopard?

I rang the Apple Store today to enquire about getting a new iMac for home. Knowing Leopard was out soon I asked if there would be a free upgrade to the new OS if I bought an iMac today. The sales guy said no, which I thought was a bit odd, but relented and offered to reduce the iMac by £80 - to cover the cost of upgrading to Leopard.

I didn’t haggle too hard so it must be a semi-official reduction (if you ask for it). I’m in no great hurry, so will probably wait until Leopard is out, but it’s worth bearing in mind if you are looking to buy immediately.

I thought it also interesting that the sales team had no idea when Leopard would be out - the official line is ‘sometime in October’. As October is only a few days away I thought Apple would’ve set a date by now.

Another thing - when choosing the spec for the iMac I asked about a RAM upgrade. A 4Gb upgrade from Apple costs a whopping £540. Huh? Buying a 4Gb RAM set from Crucial costs £190. Why the huge price difference?

I feel your pain. I’ll be purchasing it upon release with my $100 iPhone credit received earlier this month.

The memory pricing is really over the top. But, like Dell, Apple probably makes most of the profit from the upgrades.

However, a tip for anyone planning on buying the 2.8GHz 24" model online but want to buy 4GB of RAM separately from Crucial or whoever: pick the 2.4GHz model instead of the 2.8GHz model; on the options page you can upgrade it to be exactly like the 2.8GHz model but you have the extra option of having it ship with only 1GB of RAM, which is £90 not squandered on hardware you’re probably going to shelve.

Good spot Tommy. We’ve got lots of small RAM modules knocking around after similar upgrades. Seems like a waste, but it’s still cheaper to have it sit on the shelf than buy Apple’s RAM.
