Web 2.0 developers in demand

An interesting article on ITPro from last week - Web Developers are amongst the most sought-after IT professionals in the UK. In particular demand are developers ‘schooled in Web 2.0 technologies’, with the average hourly rate around £29 per hour.

Interestingly, the article claims -

Websites now offer a potentially much more sophisticated user experience than the plain text sites around in the nineties. It was relatively easy to publish a decent website back then, but now it’s difficult without expert programming skills.

Reading along these lines, it seems the advent of Web 2.0 jiggery-pokery in the last few years has helped web developers distance themselves from the ‘bedroom web designer’. It’s good that professional web developers are being taken more seriously and can command greater pay, but it’s naive to base this solely on the Web 2.0 factor. Clients will always pay more for a skilled designer or developer - Web 2.0 just means we’ve got a few more acronyms to stick on our CV.

I’m always very wary of ‘average’ wages in articles!
