UNKLE - War Stories (aka Better Late Than Never)
I’m really enjoying the new UNKLE album - War Stories. In many ways it’s the album I’ve been waiting for them to make for about 10 years.
Psyence Fiction and Never Never Land (we’ll ignore the UNKLEsounds releases) were good in their way and definitely had moments of greatness (Lonely Soul, Rabbit in the Headlights, Invasion) but in my opinion suffered from having too much filler and over-production.
War Stories is much more focussed and consistently good throughout. It’s a bit more rock than hip-hop, but that’s no bad thing. It’s difficult to identify the best tracks as they all work extremely well, but Burn My Shadow and When Things Explode both stand out, with Ian Astbury (from The Cult) doing a passable impression of Johnny Cash.
It may have taken nearly 10 years but it looks like James Lavelle’s much-hyped project has finally realised it’s potential.
