Topfield PVR

Having been on the lookout for a good PVR or HDD/DVD recorder for a while, I finally settled on the Topfield PVR TF5800. Having only just got it from Firebox yesterday, I’m still getting to grips with it, but the signs are good. Within 15 minutes we had it all tuned in and recording. After looking at lots of models, we were sold on the Topfield for a number of reasons...

  • Huge hard drive - 250 Gb is at least 90Gb more than most other devices could offer for the money
  • 2 digital tuners - couldn’t find many other devices in this price range that had 2 tuners. This gives you the ability to record multiple programmes all at the same time.
  • TAPs - or Topfield Applications. These are small applications that you can download to enhance your Topfield (e.g. skip adverts during playback, change the UI, display an image slideshow while listening to digital radio etc.). A bit like Greasemonkey scripts for Firefox.
  • USB 2.0 - to connect to my Mac and download programmes for archiving onto DVD, install TAPs or transferring data onto the PVR (such as photos)
  • Toppy.org.uk Remote Control - a service which allows you to control the PVR using SMS messages. No idea how to get this working but it sounds like good fun!
