My MacBook

I’ve decided to swap my trusty old 17-inch PowerBook G4 with a new MacBook. My old PowerBook was (and still is) a fantastic machine but it was a bit daft to have such a large and heavy portable. In terms of portability the MacBook is perfect. It has plenty power for my work (web development) and I can easily carry it around without any bother.

However, moving down from a PowerBook there are a few things that you notice using a MacBook. The materials used are not as high quality as the aluminium PowerBook. The keyboard is not as nice to type on as the PowerBook and the edge of the case (just where your wrists rest when typing) is a bit uncomfortable (the PowerBook has a smooth rubber seal to rest on).

But these are minor points really, and if you’ve never used a PowerBook (or Macbook Pro) for any length of time then you won’t notice it anyway. There’s lots of positives - the glossy wide 1280 x 850 display is excellent, the built-in iSight is great fun, the Intel Core Duo processor is powerful (though I’d recommend upgrading the 512 Mb RAM to at least 1 Gb) and iLife 06, Tiger and Front Row all run beautifully. Of course, the main positive is the price - at £749 you simply can’t buy a better portable.

And so it begins! First it’s little quality issues, then it’s laptops made out of MDF!

yeah, the quality of macbooks becomes big problems.

it seems that this 1st generation of intel "ibook" is still kinda "beta" and not mature anyway, compared to the ppc powerbooks.

I was planning to upgrade to the new macbook pro from my powerbook 1.67, but after knowing so much defects found in macbook and mbp, I decide to wait to the second generation.

good luck on your mackbook!
