Cheers

So the Web Standards Project has moved into a 'gentle leave of absence'. After two years campaigning for browser developers such as Microsoft and Netscape to embrace a set of standards, it’s probably an apt time to pay them a compliment for their efforts.

When WaSP started out in 1998 web designers were faced with building for two incompatible browsers in Internet Explorer 4 and Netscape 4. Today we have more or less forgotten those buggy incarnations - though Netscape 4 still hangs around like a beery fart - and we have standards compliant browsers like IE 5, Opera 5 and Netscape 6.

I can’t say whether or not this was a result of the efforts of WaSP, but they sure didn’t hinder the development. I reckon many web designers owe them a small debt of gratitude.
