Metatarsal Mayhem

It’s amazing how everyone knows what a metatarsal is these days. After Wayne Rooney fell awkwardly when tackled at the weekend everyone immediately commented - ‘looks like he’s done his metatarsal’. Like the latest Aston Martin, it seems to be the fashionable thing for Premiership footballers to have.

Strange thing is, until about 4 years ago it was a very rare thing (or maybe we simply called it a broken toe back then), but it’s certainly become much more commonplace now.

By coincidence, Rooney launched his new brand of Nike football boots a few days before the Chelsea game, and it seems there may be a connection with the footwear and his injury. The main selling point of the new boot is it’s lightness, but in making the boot so light, Nike seem to have compromised some of the protection and support necessary for a full 90 minutes of competitive football.

Having invested heavily in Rooney’s image, gambling that he’ll become the star of this summers World Cup, it looks like Nike might have shot themselves in the foot (ahem).
