17-inch MacBookPro

17-inch MacBookProApple has released a 17-inch MacBookPro. Apple claims the new Intel Core Duo processor gives the new laptop 5 times as much power as the trusty old G4 PowerBook. Crikey bob - 5 times! That’s a fair old leap. All this power comes at a price though. The 17-inch MacBookPro will set you back £2000 (though not as much as the first 17-inch PowerBooks, which cost £2700).

I’ve had a 17-inch PowerBook for nearly 3 years now and, aside from the keyboard going tits-up, it’s a lovely machine to own. Having said that I wouldn’t buy another. It’s great having all that screen real-estate, but you pay for it in portability. Although it’s only an inch thick, it weighs more than 3kg and is a big machine to lug around. You have to decide how important portability is to you, if you’ll be taking it loads of places, get one of the smaller models. If not, save about a £750 and buy a 20-inch iMac.
