Rebus
Being a big fan of Ian Rankin’s Rebus novels, last night I tuned into ITV1’s latest televised series. Deep down I knew it might be a mistake, and I wasn’t wrong.
The episode was (very loosely) based on last years novel Fleshmarket Close. Admittedly there’s only so much you can fit into a 90 minute TV show but it was almost a complete re-write. Where was the whole story about the Siobhan finding the missing teenager in Banehall? The story about the skeletons found in a pub in Edinburgh (giving the book it’s title), or the murder and corruption at the detention centre?
Not only was huge chunks of the novel missing, but the plot about the murdered asylum seeker was completely changed (where did that constable come from? and the missing kurdish girl?). Ach, I shouldn’t have bothered really… On the plus side I thought Ken Stott did a decent job of being Rebus.
Overall, regardless of whether you enjoyed the TV show or not, I thoroughly recommend reading some of the novels.

I’ve read half-a-dozen Rebuses and tuned in with similar trepidation. It’s not that it was a bad programme, but it was very frustrating to watch along with the drastically different novel in the back of your mind. Danny Boyle (the script writer) may as well have re-titled it.
As you say, on the positive side, Stott was excellent and makes a far better Rebus than John Hannah.

Aye, I saw Danny Boyle’s name on the credits. Is that the same Danny Boyle who directed Trainspotting and 28 Days Later?

And not content with that, but they’re blocking off an annoyingly large chunk of Glasgow for a couple of hours while they film another one!
snip:
There was a letter handed in yesterday by SMG to say that they will be filming at Abode hotel on Monday 13 March 08.00 - 19.00 approx. This means that technical vehicles will be parked as close to the location as possible and thus cones will be placed along West Campbell Street (both sides, between West Regent street and Bath street) and Bath Street (South Side between West Campbell Street and Blythswood Street). Therefore can you avoid parking in these areas on Monday 13th March.
Grr!
