Christopher Reeve 1952-2004
Christopher Reeve was one of those actors that you remember vividly from childhood (well from mine anyway). As Superman he was a hero to all kids growing up in the 80’s. The role he played in those films was so powerful that I couldn’t really name any other films he appeared in.
After becoming paralysed in 1995, we never heard much about him again (in Britain at least). However, his Superman role had already ensured him of iconic status, so I was sad to hear this morning that he had died of heart attack.
Although arguably not the greatest actor that ever lived, it’s always sad to hear that a hero of your childhood has died.

I’ve just always felt a little bitter about his whole chartable quest to ‘cure spinal paralysis’. He didn’t do anything charitable until he required help himself..

Jeebus, he was paralysed from the neck down! I doubt his lack of contribution to stem cell research before his accident (um, how do you know he didn’t do anything charitable beforehand anyway?) was going to stop him from piling money into finding a cure for himself and in so doing, a cure for others suffering from similar paralysis.
Incidentally, I think the films Superman 1 and 2 remain the greatest of the comicbook to bigscreen conversions. Superman 3 was mediocre and 4 was, well, tosh really wasn’t it? Wasn’t the bad dude called Nuclear Man, or something?

It went downhill from Superman 2 really, though Richard Pryor (Gus Gorman) did his best to save the third one. Superman 4 (The Quest for Peace) was total nonsense and is best forgotten.
