Top 10 moments of Euro 2004

After a slow start, Euro 2004 is turning into a great tournament. Here’s my top 10 highlights so far (in no particular order) :

  1. Henrik Larsson’s diving header against Bulgaria.
  2. The cross by Erik Edman which preceded #2.
  3. Bored cameramen filming pretty ladies in the crowd during the Italy v Sweden game.
  4. Joe Royle accusing the Croatia goalkeeper of having “chocolate wrists”.
  5. Zidane’s technicolor yawn before scoring a penalty against England.
  6. The entire 90 mins of Holland v Czech Republic.
  7. Fabien Barthez getting hit on the nose by the ball during France v England.
  8. The Pierluigi Collina death-stare.
  9. Gordon Strachan’s ill-advised adjectives — “Ronaldo has been roasting the Spanish left-back all night”…
  10. Gordon Strachan replying “Top myself”, when asked by Gary Lineker what he’d do if he were English (before the France game).

ZZ threw up? I must have missed that. As for Gordon - he is sadly missed down here in the south (Saints fan, me). Paul Sturrock is (a) a good manager, and (b) also Scottish, but no-one can match WGS for entertaining post-match interviews!

'ZZ threw up?'

Yeah, it wasn’t caught on ITV’s coverage, but it was filmed by several others. He managed to make it look pretty casual, but definitely had a tactical chunder. Didn’t seem to put him off though ;-)

I quite liked the ‘italy going out’ part :)

Denmark 2, Sweden 2. Imagine that? Poor Italians.

Also, Germany losing to the Czech reserve team (and going out of the tournament). That was fun :)

We won! ;D

A Portuguese Reader...!!!

Well your team deserved it Marco. I thought England were terrible, apart from Ashley Cole and Sol Campbell.

Well done Marco. Although England were denied by a highly contentious refereeing decision, Portugal were still the better team.

What more can one say.

I thought England were crap and Portugal deserved to win. They played much better and look stronger on the field.

Nowt like rubbing the win in England’s face by allowing the goalie to score the last penalty. Pure Class.

Beckham was shit. Fancy turning around looking at the penalty spot as if it was the grasses fault for him missing completly - ‘A workman never blames his tools.’

Ahem.

Can I add Michael Owen’s post match interview in which he solemnly declared "These major tournaments come around once every two years, so we can’t expect to win them every year..."?
And we all thought Becks was the stupid one...

Well France have just gone out to Greece, that’s some consolation ;)

Is Holland the luckiest team or what? Well Marco, it looks like our teams are up next. :) May the best team win, whoever that me be because I have no idea. Should be a fantastic match either way!

I’m sure Collina starred in a 1977 horror movie called ‘The Hills Have Eyes’
