helium-3

Matt is back with a new weblog project. Frownland as we used to know it is no longer, but all the content lives on under a new guise — helium-3. It’s an experiment in DIY blogging with the site being served from Matt’s own iMac DVSE over a blueyonder broadband connection. As Matt says —

“Not sure what the implications of this are yet, but I guess I’ll find out sooner or later. Just donít expect 100% uptime as I forgetfully turn my computer off on the odd occassion.”

Thanks guys.

I’m still not sure what I’m doing is a wise move. I’ve tried to keep everything as streamlined as possible to save processor usage and I guess I’ll have to steer clear of downloading stuff using Bittorrent as things’ll slow to a crawl!

I’ve got round the dynamic IP address problem by using the excellent (and free) Dynamic DNS service at DynDNS.org (http://www.dyndns.org/services/dyndns/). After setting up an account, you can add up to 5 hosts using a predefined set of domain names (yourname.homeip.com, anothername.homeunix.com etc.) then it’s a case of setting up Virtual Hosting with Apache (http://www.dyndns.org/support/kb/apachevhosts.html), setting up a little utility called DNSUpdate (http://www.dyndns.org/services/dyndns/clients.html) and Bob’s your uncle.

As simple as that? lol

Any special reason for the name Matt?

Erm.. not really. Except that it was in the news the other day - potentially it’s the ultimate fuel source, although we’d have to go to the moon to get it:

Other than that I guess it’s a reference to trying to keep my blog simple and uh.. light, as it were.

..and odourless? ;-)

I was thinking that if I were to try out Audblog (http://www.audblog.com/) sometime in the future, I could do the old helium-balloon trick with my voice :)
