Ankles
Ankles are an impressive bit of bio-engineering. We tend to forget this until we bugger them up. Last night at football my ankle got caught in the turf and it twisted inside my leg. My ankle complained at it’s shoddy treatment by it’s owner by dishing out large amounts of pain for the next 10 minutes. Eventually it took pity on me and only stretched it’s spidery ligaments, without going all the way and severing itself completely from the bone. Still bloody hurts though.

I just knackered my ankle for the third time in about six weeks the other day. It was jolly painful, I can tell you. Apparently once you have a bad sprain you are more susceptible to repeated sprains not only because your tendons are weakened, but also your proprioceptors are damaged and your balance impaired. So I bought me a ‘wobble board’ (a disc of plywood glued onto a wooden hemisphere, bargain for 20 quid), which is the recommended way of strengthening your ankle and improving your balance. You are supposed to work up to 2 minutes without the edges touching the floor. So far I have managed maybe 10 seconds, but it is quite addictive. People in my office keep nicking it to have a go, bastards...

The nurse who spent 10 minutes fondling my foot said I was lucky not to tear any ligaments. It didn’t seem to be much consolation as she twisted my foot 90 degrees and I nearly punched her in agony. Hopefully in a few weeks I should be okay, but one of those boards sounds the job to get the strength back - where can I pick one up?

Lovely - cheers Rik. My ankle is slowly getting stronger though I had a few bevvies on Saturday night (which funnily enough numbed the pain) and strained it a bit too much. doh!
