Rally Sting

How sneaky can you get? Most of the worlds top rally drivers face driving disqualifications after South Wales police set up speed traps during the British leg of last years World Championship.

As part of the competition, the drivers have to drive their rally cars on the public roads between stages of the championship. 20 drivers were caught in the traps, including Colin McRae, Richard Burns and Carlos Sainz, and face court in November to plead their cases.

Geez, you’d think the authorities didn’t want the rally there, despite the money it rakes in for the local economy. Bring it back to Kielder, says I! :)

Oh, hang on - maybe they just thought they were onto *another* nice little earner with the speeding fines. ;)

It’s not just fines - I think Armin Schwarz is looking at disqualification after getting caught by five cameras on the same road - doh!

They can do that?!? Not just bundle all offences on a given day together as one? Seems well harsh. Sounds to me more like he committed only a single crime - just over an extended period.

I’m fairly sure the Police will add up the points incurred for each offence and decide the punishment from there. I’ve certainly heard of people who’ve been caught by several cameras on one journey, and found themselves with a ban after all the offences (and points) were totalled up.

I’m willing to be proved wrong though...

Well, four of them got bans and others were just fined or given points:

I bet Kris Meeke’s a bit annoyed, what with being a Brit.

Phew - at least the FIA hasn’t cancelled the event in protest.
