Sony PSP

Nintendo’s dominance of the handheld gaming market looks set to be challenged by Sony. PSP (I’m unsure what this stands for - if anything), is the name of Sony’s new handheld console, due to be on sale at the end of next year.

Details are thin on the ground but it should feature a backlit LCD screen and play games equal in quality to PSOne games. By the time it’s launched Nokia’s N-Gage will also be on sale, so we should have another 3-way console war.

As good as Nintendo’s Gameboy is, competition can only be beneficial for us, the consumer. Grand Turismo on the train to work anyone?...

Playstation Portable, sounds great. The upsides: no stupidly short controller cables. The downsides: small screen+subpar graphics. Perplexing: Cartridge or minidisc?

Advance has been out for awhile now. Nintendo will surely come out with something better or equal or something.

jellohead · 9 years, 12 months ago

Sorry guys put the hand held console race looks to be already won, With Sony announcing that it’s capable of handling FULL 3D graphics and pretty much the same power as the PSone. Lets also not forget that the storage of the UMD rom is ammense compared to the cartridge rom of the GBA. The only people that are going to bash this beauty is the Nintendo fan boys, dont count on Nintendo getting a machine like this in the next 3 to 4 years.

Daman · 9 years, 12 months ago

The Sony may appear superior technically, but they’d be foolish to disregard the massive Nintendo fan-base (12 million GBA units already sold). Look at the Xbox - a much better console than the PS2, but the PS2 has by far the larger share of the market.

Phil · 9 years, 12 months ago

Not even if microsoft relese there own handheld system with nintendo will they gain control over the title "King of HandHeld."

jubei · 9 years, 12 months ago

I believe sony is stupid putting mini discs in a case. Just think how hard it would be to develop for PSP. I know that if I made games I would want to make them as fast as possible.

guest · 9 years, 12 months ago

As for sony dominating all the gaiming industry dont count on it. Nintendo has learned from their mistakes in the console industry atleast we hope.

guest · 9 years, 12 months ago

Let’s not get over opinionated about how well the system is going to do. And by the way guest the UMD’s
is 1.8 GiGs if you haven’t checked, that is the same if not larger than the GC’s disk.

Game_Over · 9 years, 11 months ago

it’s pretty stupid, the screen of the "psp" is 11 by 9 inches, what kind of portable is that, and it would probably cost like 300 dollars along with the games that cost 8o dollars. Portable means u could walk around with it not put it in ur bag and take it out for everyone to see and then play, i mean that’s so stupid.

petro czupiel · 9 years, 11 months ago

Hey petro, where did you get "11x9"?

QjO · 9 years, 11 months ago

I agree there should b a gamecube advance, sony don’t mess with da gameboy.

ethan kerr · 9 years, 11 months ago

lets just remember that handhelds are all about cheap mini games you can play on the move. In this case, unlike home units, its the design of the product and the quantity and variety of games so sony is going to have it hard. Who cares about 3D. Youre going to play it on the way to school or work. What they need is a very portable machine.

quality/quantity · 9 years, 11 months ago

gamecube advance now theres a good idea. They pack that into a gameboy advance SP casing, lots and lots of games and you have the best portable console on earth for years and years to come. (BTw I have a PSone and PS2 and im not one of those nintendo freak fans)

quality/quantity · 9 years, 11 months ago

The screen is actually 4.5". Also here is some more news:

CNN has reported that industry insiders anticipate the PSP to go on sale in the $125 - $200 range with games priced in the $15-$25 range.

So it sounds like games should be a little lower than GBA but the unit is going to be up to 2x as expensive. Honestly, I’ve never been impressed by the GB or GBA. I have yet to see anything that I would consider impressive from the GBA, so we will have to see how the PSP compares.

skeptic · 9 years, 11 months ago

Titles sell boxes.
Sony can better negotiate exclusive publishing and distribution rights than any other console seller. Nokia will be in a tough spot negotiating for rights (very little experience), Nintendo faces pressure on two consoles (GB and GC) and a dwindling cash reserve, and Microsoft is unlikely to further extend their core business.
Look for existing development on PS1 to migrate to the PSP, and for Nintendo management to change their shorts;-)

ushouldknow · 9 years, 11 months ago

by the way boys the psp mini discs are faster and easier to produce then the old cartridge roms

Omnislash · 9 years, 11 months ago

If anyone can takeout Nintendo and force them into software development only....it’s SONY. They have the marketing, the licenses, arguable 1st party developers now, and not to mention the Design team to craft a stylish machine.

If Nintendo loses dominance in Handheld market.....they will go the way of Sega.....mark my words. GBA Sales are the only thing really keeping them in contention.

Nintendo created their worst enemy.

goose · 9 years, 11 months ago

Gameboy overcame LYNX and GameGear at a time when both of the other consoles were superior to Gameboy. PSP will be destroyed by GBA.

Welcometothenextlevel · 9 years, 11 months ago

I don’t know what killed the GameGear (except maybe the fact that Sega never could figure out how to market equipment), but the Lynx was killed because of resellers doubts that Atari would be around much longer causing U.S. sales of the Jaguar and the Lynx to be not as high as expected. The Lynx was also killed by a lack of titles at launch, which you know Sony isn’t going to fall victim to.

I had a Lynx and it was by far the better machine in all categories compared to the GB. The GB though had 5x the titles, and was cheaper to buy as well as produce.

Belgarath · 9 years, 11 months ago

Why all the fight, why all the fuss...uhn, just let me bust.

All kidding aside, don’t you guys think theres enough room in the market for multiple systems. That’s what the whole industry is driven upon, competition. I have an XBOX, PS2, Camecube, 3 or 4 Dreamcasts (dont ask), GBA-SP and a NeoGeo Pocket. I play them all. Sure, if a game comes out on multiple systems I usually opt for the Xbox version just for graphics sake (Matrix Reloaded is a prime example), but overall I play all of them about equal. Another handheld (or two) will not phase me or make me hate the others. When I get the cash I’d like to get the Korean made GamePark32. It’s a solid system with growing support and a nice library of games. Why can’t gamers enjoy their "freedom of choice" rather than be a fanboy and cut on legit systems. So what you remember the good old days of 8 bit NES and you want Nintendo to come out on top. Buy their stuff, but don’t limit yourself because of some flame war. Play games.

elliothurts · 9 years, 11 months ago

amen elliothurts... but i guess for some it all boils down choosing 1 machine because not everyone has the budget to support buying a whole slew of gaming machines...

both should be able to exists, because they appeal to different markets... sure sp is targeted at an older audience, but nintendo’s prime market will always be the younger demographic... with price and specs psp will probably capture the adult gamer market....

damn i don’t want to wait 1.5 yrs for a psp! hurry up sony

jaems · 9 years, 11 months ago

Allegiance to a platform is what makes the console war worth fighting. If there isn’t favoritism, consoles will go the way of VCRs. Who really cares what brand of VCR you buy? If we don’t have war, we’ll have peace. Usually that’s a good thing, but here it results in apathy and standardization of gaming. There will be no difference in buying the next product from Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, or any other contender.

hikkifan · 9 years, 11 months ago

Y'all think dat PSP and GBA sp kick ass but a company called VAGER are devoloping a handheld with a 7 inch screen and a graphics card to mach pentium 4

Dogg · 9 years, 11 months ago

Okay nikkifan, you’re not actually making any sense. If anything, favortism hurts other companies as their products don’t get a fair chance. For instance, There are a lot more Sony fanboys than Sega fans. That, coupled with Sega’s poor marketing, killed the Dreamcast.

Favoritism helps sell systems, but what you’re rationlizing is the excapt opposite of what you say you want. If you keep favoring one company, isn’t that in the same line as not caring what the compny puts out, only that it puts something out? You’re the exact product of what you dislike.

Oh, Dogg, if VAGER is putting out a system with a 7 inch screen, how is that gonna fit in my pocket? Maybe it will in your big homie pants.

I’ve been waiting for another handheld ever since the ol' NG Pocket disappeared. I don’t like Sony, but the fact that I might buy the PSP is a good thing, even if I don’t favor them.

gel · 9 years, 11 months ago

Let me remind you that X Box, a new contender, has built up a large army of gamers that defend it jealously against detractors and PS2 fans. It has taken a sizeable chunk of the gaming industry’s income. Certainly nothing compared to PS2, but it’s holding strong. As elliothurts reminded us, people like X Box hardware, but also enjoy the variety of games for the PS2. Favoritism doesn’t necessarily prohibit diversity of one’s gaming tendencies, it adds to the excitement of buying, owning, and playing.

hikkifan · 9 years, 11 months ago

QUOTED Daman.

Then again Daman, only Sony Fan-Boys would bash Nintendo...

Also, don’t forget the fact that there may be another portable by Nintendo that is being made. Never underestimate anything. BTW, I’m not bashing the PSP, just saying that you can’t bash the Game Boy.

Oh yeah, and Frank, just because Nintendo makes products made for the whole ‘audience’ doesn’t mean that it is ‘kitty’. Think of it this way, does a bloody game with blood around every corner make a good game? Or is it the gameplay, graphics, and replayibility? You should take that into consideration...

Enough said.

Azrael · 9 years, 11 months ago

wELL FROM MY TIME PLAYING THE GAMES SINCE 1942! WELL I HAVE COME TO LOVE BOTH SYSTEMS WHICH COME FROM MY hOMELAND nIHON(jAPAN). So u all bash both consoles each have there pro and cons. SONY has a variety of games, but graphics wise it looks like crap! Game cube has so many accesories the ability to have a handheld system(GBAor SP) to connect to it makes it a awesome system. Dont forget the software (Mario, Yoshi and Bowser). THey have been with us since we were young. PSP or whatever its called is going to be added to the whole list of Handhelds. BUt just think Nomad! Remember when that came out with the sega! i loved it u could play sega games the 32 b it ones and the graphics were awesome. Where did that go it just flopped! So PSP is out it plays PS1 games so what we got thats stupid PSONE shit thats small witht he screen! Do u see kids running out and getting it! Right now its about COnsoles or PC systems which make up the market! The handheld system mostly consist of the GBA! Gba games are mostly children games which mainly involve the adolescent age groups! when a you go to older age groups they are more drawn to power like the console systems or PC not GBA! So think about it a dynasty a console which kids can easly start up and play with out trouble will always be with Game Boy! Its been here since the beginning and will stay with us till the end!

mr. HIDEKI TOJO · 9 years, 11 months ago

I just want to know where you got the info that the development is easier than cartridge.

guest · 9 years, 11 months ago

All I have heard is that its easier to develop for game boy but really who cares most of us are getting to old for those wimpy handheld crap. I wish sony would stop wasting their time with it and work on bigger and better things. Listen to Hideki he is basically saying that portable systems are for kids.

Protables are not crap. What the heck are you to do on a train, or when you have free time and you can’t get a console or PC to play on. What would you do? You could always read, there isn’t any harm in that. Or you could play a portable system... of course. So please think before you say anything... and please use better grammer...

Azrael · 9 years, 11 months ago

My bad, spelled "Portables" wrong...

Azrael · 9 years, 11 months ago

Im a sophomore. Whenever i gotta free minute in school i play GBA SP. I can’t be carryin around a huge system in my pocket during school. All that i want in a portable system is for it to be small and to be backlight, graphics are a bonus. If sony can match the size of gba sp and have graphics i know that i will have one. I would gouge my eyes out before i would read with my free time. When im home im on the xbox or ps2, i dont have a favoite company, i just go for the best there is.

johnny truant · 9 years, 11 months ago

I have a GBA SP and i’m 14. I bought it for the 2-D games, and maybe some of the better looking 3-D games. I also have a GameCube... and a PS1. Now i look at the graphics on my PS1, and all i see is graphics breaks. 2-D is faultless, and the 3-D of next-gen consoles is flawless, so why go back to having poor 3-D games, when you can have amazingly enjoyable 2-D ones?? Dwy ddim yn gwybod!

Monkey with Gun · 9 years, 11 months ago

There is somthing missing here guys...

it is the Resolution Issue.. PSP will win 100% not only for the 3D part no it will have better NO superior 2D games to at 3X resolution...

unless Nintendo is working hard on anew N64 handheld system theyll sure end up like sega and we ll see Mario on the Xbox2 and PS3 soon...

regarding batterylife and size the technology Sony is using here for chipsets uses less power than the GBA if the difference is reserved for the laser motor then we mite see a 10 hours PSP battery life...

also, with the new resolution and more colors expect to see better strategy games like red alert or dune2000 on a handheld fort he first time

I am dying to play winning eleven on the street How about tekken in 3d compared to GBA tekken disaster...

come on guys be realistic ok

unless NINTENDO IS planning a n64 With min laser disk they r history

TOOTOO · 9 years, 11 months ago

Please don’t be so dumb into thinking cartridges are easier to develop for the minidiscs. Everyone knows that CD’s/DVD’s have always been easier to develop for, hence the problems with the N64. This new form of Minidisc is just a DVD in a case. Therefore it will be so much easier to develop for then cartridges, Nintendo can say goodbye to it’s third party games entirely.

I’m actually a Nintendo fan, but I hate the GBA, it’s about 10 years behind, the graphics are no better then the Sega Game Gear released all that time ago. The GBA is what Nintendo should of released 6 years ago.

TheUltimate¨_________¨ · 9 years, 11 months ago

TheUltimate, I beg to differ. Looking at the Game Gear’s graphics and the GBA’s graphics is completley different.

First off, try COMPARING two games. I will use The original Game Gear ‘Sonic’ title (I forgot the name) to the game on GBA called ‘Sonic Advance’. Note all the graphics; they look nothing alike.

Second, technical aspects show that the GBA is by-far, superior to the Game Gear.

Also, Nintendo was working on the GBA about 6 years ago. You have to know that any project does take a long time. I bet you couldn’t even make a game system; crappy or good (and if you know C++, you still won’t know how to make a game console)

You can see for yourself that your arguement is obsolete...

On the other note, PSP may be better graphics-wise, but is it PORTABLE or SMALL? Those are the key factors when making a PORTABLE system. I wouldn’t want to lug around a 20-pound game handheld if I could carry a 2-pound game system whose graphics are just a little worse.

Also, as I said before, we don’t even know if Nintendo has another game system in development. They might have another handheld that they didn’t show at E3; something they want to keep secret for their reasons...

Ha, TOOTOO, you are almost right. If Nintendo doesn’t make another handheld soon, they may fall behind, but they won’t be ‘history’. The GBA (or GBA SP) as said before, is probably smaller. Also, keep in mind that people want a portable system... (I have to say that multiple times, due to all the people out there who can’t seem to get that through their brain)

Don’t think Nintendo is out yet...

Azrael · www · 9 years, 11 months ago

By the way, johnny truant, you are right. Almost the whole population forgot about reading. Probably because the technology has dominated ‘ink on paper’... oh well...

Azrael · www · 9 years, 11 months ago

"unless Nintendo is working hard on anew N64 handheld system theyll sure end up like sega and we ll see Mario on the Xbox2 and PS3 soon... "

TOOTOO if you know anything at all about Nintendo then you would know that a Nintendo made game will never appear on another console that is not made by nintendo.

And here is some new news on whats happening with Nintendo and there next handheld and home console...

Iwata plans to change Nintendo’s current image by introducing new franchises.
Talking to the press in Kyoto this morning Nintendo’s president Satoru Iwata spoke on many issues.

On the subject of Nintendo’s next generation of hardware he said that they are willing to invest a significant amount of $6 billion into the development of both the console and portable hardware. He plans to make the next console "...the greatest gaming machines ever.î

He also spoke about characters and franchises and stated that he plans to introduce new franchises and they are hoping that this will reach the success of Mario and PokÈmon. He stated that there is heavy development towards these new franchises at present.

The Lillster · 9 years, 11 months ago

Azrael, I have to disagree with you. First of all the Gameboy Advance was not in development for 6 years, I know this as a fact. The only proof I can give you on this is that development didn’t start till the Gameboy Color was released/near to being released. Which means not too much time was spent on it at all.

Second of all, of course the GBA has better graphics then the Gamegear, but it’s not that much of a leap, not the leap you’d expect for about 10 years difference. Sonic is the main game I’d like to use for comparison, whilst you go on to say the games look nothing alike, I own both/completed both, and I say the graphics are not that much better on the GBA at all, infact in theory I prefer the GG’s style of sonic (that’s just opinon, but it’s not an opinon that the games aren’t that disimular in graphical style at all).

I didn’t mean to say that the GBA graphics are not better then the Gamegear, just not the leap I would of expected in that amount of time. As you said the GBA is techically alot better, but graphics wise in most games, not that much better at all.

To put it simply the GBA should of been released a few years after Game Gear, because the jump isn’t that great at all.

TheUltimate¨_________¨ · 9 years, 11 months ago

2.Nintendo has interviewed Sony and Nintendo is not afraid
3.Nintendo has many full 1rst person shooters for the GBA SP

So leave the handheld business to the pros and let PS2 rock on!!!!! ;P

Nintenboy · 9 years, 11 months ago

Almost everyone on this forum has forgotten something very important: NO ONE HAS A CLUE WHAT THE FRIGGIN PSP LOOKS LIKE YET!!! so how can anyone say how portable or not it is? I’ve been with Sony since the beginning and I have every confidence that they’ll come out on top just like they always do. I respect the other console companies but i wouldn’t buy anything else except a sony system. Heck, my brother works at Microsoft and i could have had an xbox for free after it came out but i opted to shell out the 300 bucks for a PS2 and i have absolutely no regrets - More games, better games (Can u say GRAND THEFT AUTO: VICE CITY?)

So, before everyone loses their minds over this issue, why don’t we all have a little patience and see what happens with the PSP, at least wait until sony releases a picture of it.

By the way, cd and minidiscs ARE way easier to develop for than cartridges, get it right

Also, THE N-GAGE IS GONNA BLOW CHUNKS!!

This Flame War can last on forever...

I’m with both systems. I say that they are both on par (with the exeption of the crappy Nintendo Gamecube and GBA games like Mickey Mouse... -_-).

Anyway...

I represent no system, but too many people flame Nintendo. Same with Nintendo addicts. They seem to try to flame Sony also.

Guys, they’re games. Leave a little competition, but do not say one is better without knowing about the other one...

Wow, I’m always here...

PS: TheUltimate, once more, I differ. You are right, the graphics aren’t what you would expect after about 7 years, but Nintendo did just start working on the GBA approx. 6 years ago. Don’t argue with that, I won’t fall from that position.

The PSP will be a sight to behold, and I will try to own both systems.

Instead of playing these little mini portable gaming systems, why don’t you just play PC games? Every portable system available has crappy graphics! ( And I have a GBA ) Sure, you can’t play a PC on the train unless you have a laptop with a case. And it would be too hard to get the money for one of those. Why don’t you morons debate at forums for money? It seems like that’s the only skill you have! For everyone else, whittle down your thumbs on a CrapBoyAdvance or a Piss station portable! Maybe pick up a book!

you people are dumbasses i swear.... nobody knows what in the world a PSP will look like, how big it will be, or how infinitly superior it will be to the GBA. All we know are specs, and by specs alone i looks like it will wipe the floor with GBA. Now consider the ungodly huge library of games for PS1, and how simple it probably would be for sony to put those on the new mini discs. Now consider total domination of GBA assured unless Sony f–ks up somewhere, which, knowing them, they wont do. THis may be the first handheld I buy that I keep for over 2 months (GB Advance pre-SP edition holds that record right now, solely because of Advance Wars.)

decodergrizzly, Vice City isn’t that great...

Adam F., PSP hasn’t even been fully developed. Sony has no idea what it is to look like.

Aghhh, its hard to stay with any side...

Sony will PROBABLY have a big portable. If not, then Nintendo will have to come up with something to stay in the competition...

However, if Sony’s PSP is big, then Nintendo is not dead...
