Colossal Calamari
Scientists in the Antarctic have landed an enormous squid, measuring more than 20 metres long. The creature, thought to be one of the largest underwater predators, has a mantle 2.5 metres long and has razor sharp hooks on each tentacle. The colossal squid is thought to live more than 2km below the surface of the water and preys on Patagonian Toothfish and Sperm Whales.

Preys on sperm whales?!? Good god, you’d be nothing more than a quick nibble if you fell into that thing’s path.

Absolutely. If you happened to be scuba diving 2km down in the Antarctic Ocean, you’d be gutted if you happened upon one of these bad boys :-)
As a side note, not something I’d really post about, but I couldn’t get the phrase ‘Colossal Calamari’ out of my head all morning...

I heard that squid numbers are on the increase is this true? and if they are why?
Exactly how big do you think colossal squids grow and do they live in enviroments that could cause them to collide with human ships and even cause human fatalities?

What are the hooks made of?
Jacob · 4 years, 8 months ago
I wonder what the hooks are made of ? I really don’t want to find out. Hahahaha!
Jacob · 4 years, 8 months ago
what a load of rubbish! The main predators of colossal squid are big bull sperm whales, they only have the ability to dive down to the depths needed to find the colossal squid. I can assure you they suffer great damage when fighting these creatures but in the end get the meal their effort deserves. The idea of enormous quid eating sperm whales has come from fables passed down over the years.

However, I would like to add that both the colossal squid and giant squid are fascinating.
