O'Reilly has an interesting article on retrieving and analysing the metadata stored on your digital photographs.

I wasn’t aware of this, but when your digital camera takes a shot, data such as time, shutter speed, aperture, focal length, and ISO are written to the file header. This information can be then examined within image editing applications such as Photoshop 7 or iPhoto.

Analysis of this data will help us take better pictures, but there is plenty of potential in this technology. Soon GPS-equipped cameras will be able to record positioning co-ordinates to the image metadata file, that could later be translated into locations when browsed with the image editor.

Clever huh?

Excellent! Just the other day, I was lamenting the lack of metadata in my photos and it seems it was there all along! :) Now I just need to find (or write) some decent little plug-in for Windows...

Good to hear Matt. Incidentally, having problems getting to your site - what’s up?

Matt? Ah well, it could be worse. At least you’re not a girl in the throes of passion.

Moving on..... the domain’s registration expired recently, but it looks like the renewal’s come into effect now. Shame it’s pointing at completely the wrong place. :/

Yeah pretty cool ain’t it. I’ve know about this for over a year, but haven’t really looked into it until recently.

You might be interested in this little app for OS X if you have a digital camera which records EXIF meta-data. Enjoy. =)
