I read about the right mess Apple got into when releasing the iTunes 2 installer for Mac OS X. The installer got pulled off Apple’s website after customers had experienced loss of data from partitioned hard drives.
It’s baffling that Apple managed to release such a widely anticipated piece of software (publicised strongly with the iPod) without it being properly tested. I love Apple products - I admire the efforts they put into the design and usability of their products, but they make it really hard sometimes when they mess things up like this.
To achieve a greater market share and popularity, Apple have to prove that beyond the glossy eye candy of their software and hardware, they really do build solid usable and reliable tools, and episodes like this unfortunately do not enhance this notion.
