House of Terror

House of Terror

Budapest’s controversial 'House of Terror' on Andrassy Street. The building was the headquarters of the Hungarian Nazis between 1944 and 1945, then was taken over by the Communist secret police once Soviet troops liberated, then occupied, Hungary. The building is now a memorial to victims of totalitarian terror.

Wow, the ‘terror’ lettering looks fascinating. I presume (and hope) that this is some kind of sculpture piece added after the Nazi occupation?

I guess so Matt – it was made a museum in 2002, so I assume that’s when the signage was added. It’s quite striking isn’t it? Unfortunately it wasn’t sunny when we were there – I would’ve liked to have taken a photo of the sun stencilling the lettering onto the building.

Cool pictures. You’re right–it would have been a really interesting effect (possibly ominious?) if the sunshine had created a shadow of the words ‘terror’ on the building. I think you need to hit Budapest again and try for another picture of this building with the sun out.

On another note, I love your site for the remarkable pictures, they are consistently beautiful and unique in their perspective. I just saw the peacock picture and my breath was literally taken away by it. Opps, I probably shouldn’t be talking about another picture–confusing.

Alas, as an American I envy your ability to travel and experience other cultures that can be so completely different from your own by simply driving a few hours or taking an hour flight. I traveled a lot in Europe but it has been a few years since I have been back. You have traveled to many places that I haven’t so it’s a real treat to see your pictures and experience a little of these cities through your eyes. I think after another visit or two I will be forced to make a trip somewhere in Europe.
Keep up the good work. The site is great.
