New G5s

inside the new G5Apple have announced a new G5 lineup. All models now feature dual G5 processors, with the top of the range model now expanded to 2.5 GHz (dual 1.25 GHz). Mighty impressive, though still short of the 3 GHz speed Steve Jobs promised at last years WWDC.

In order to keep this powerhouse from burning a hole through the carpet, Apple have decided to liquid cool the system. The design of the case doesn’t seem to have changed much, with most of the changes happening inside.

In addition to the new G5 spec, Apple also announced the discontinuation of the PowerMac G4. The trusty old QuickSilver MDD G4s were kept on mainly for OS 9 users, but once the current stock runs down, they’ll no longer be available on Apple Store.

Also, Apple have also released iTunes 4.6, featuring AirTunes.

Phew… it’s been a busy week.

The G4s were MDDs, not QuickSilvers. Also, you could get 8GB of RAM in the original 1.8GHz and 2GHz G5 PowerMacs. Don’t you remember Phil Schiller excitedly waving his karate marketing hands saying "breaking the four gigabyte barrier"? ;)

We’re gonna order a new G5 tommorow, gonna go for the 2.5ghz with 1 gb RAM and 2 x 250gb drives. This dual G4 Im on now is starting to feel a little slow, should be a noticable increase in speed. I can’t wait, but won’t get delivered until July.

should it not be "G5s" not "G5's"

Not sure what’s happening on the G5 Powerbook front. Last September, Jobs hinted that they will arrive late this summer. Since then, Apple have been downplaying suggestions of an upcoming G5 PB, most recently with Tom Boger saying that ‘users should not expect G5 Powerbooks this year’. I do believe Jobs is sitting in his big chair with his feet up, basking in the success of the iPod and iTMS while holding off major Powerbook revisions.

Cheers for the heads-up on typos and incorrections. I’ve amended the post. That’s what you get when rushing out a post before lunch ;-)

Matt - regarding the G5 Powerbook, Apple claim the hold-up has been down to technical problems getting a cooling system into the portable casing. Anyone who has seen the size of the heatsink inside the G5 will know what I mean!

It would be sweet to have a G5 PowerBook, but it’s cloud-talk with the current heat production. You’d need heat-shielded trousers. ;)

I remember reading, a while back, about a 17" dual G4 PowerBook. I’m sure that would make up for the wait.

I have to be honest I’m considerably underwhelmed by the new G5’s. Ok, the water cooling is a fascinating new feature, which will probably be making it’s way into the G5 laptop eventually. I just can’t believe that Apple have the front to ship these machines with, frankly, the naffest graphics cards in town.

Ok, the Radeon 9800 XT is probably a fairly good card, but compared to the recent batch of pc card’s from nVidia and ATI (6800 and X300) Apple is lagging behind badly. At the end of the day Apple need to give users more flexibility when it comes to the graphics hardware that can be added.

Surely the top of the line model has dual 2.5ghz processors, not dual 1.25s.
