Direct Connect

While it may sound like something you would call to arrange a home insurance policy, Direct Connect is a popular peer-to-peer file sharing system now available to Mac OS X users. Much that I’d like to sing its praises for offering an alternative to the Gnutella based Aquisition, this client fails as a piece of OS X software. The number of windows the user has to deal with makes the interface unwieldy and files seem to download just as infrequently as your average Gnutella client. It’s worth downloading to see what the fuss is about, but this file sharing client needs to be improved before it can be classed as a useful piece of OS X software.

Those halcyon days of copyright-free Napster running 30-odd simultaneous downloads and 300k connection speeds seem a long time ago....

it’s an absolute pig to use (i have seven direct connect windows open as i type) but i do have twenty-odd new mp3s half an hour after firing up the app for the first time, which compares favourably to acquisition’s tendency to never download anything ever...

I’ve been looking for a reliable p2p and I heard about Direct Connect but after hearing your comments I don’t think I’ll bother
I’m using Kazzaa at the mo but I find alot of the files misnamed so you never know what you’ll end up with
I had some success with Overnet but sometimes it just sits there waiting for a source to download from
Anyone got any ideas of a good p2p ?

In order to use it properly, you need to understand its advanced features, if you have used IRC, multiple windows is no problem.

The one thing I find bad about DC, is the inability to take from multiple sources at once, in order to get higher speeds. This would give you max speed on all downloads if the file were popular

I second that
if you could download a file from multipule users, like Kazza, through DC I might get more than 70 kbs from my cable connection, Wow !!
