E is for Education
Apple has quietly slipped an education version of the iMac onto the market. Named the eMac, it is essentially an LCD iMac with a 17" CRT display, at a more affordable price - $1000.
Specifically available to education customers in the US and Canada, it is a little unclear if you can buy it privately, or why Apple chose to develop a new case design rather than push the existing iMac product. First assumptions would probably be that Apple priced the new iMac out of the reach of schools and the easiest way to cut costs would be to lose the LCD screen, and use a case design more like the G3 iMac.

okay, not really an OS X related post, but each eMac will have OS X 10.1.4 pre-installed, which can only help OS X’s user base :-)

I always treat a move by Apple to broaden it’s offerings with caution. I’ve glanced over the specs and I don’t see anything really unique. I think that Apple needs to be very reluctant of trying to reach to me "niche" markets, staying with the really unique products that have brought them back to relevance.

Insanely Great Mac has an interesting article on the eMac and raises the question - will there be a grey market demand for the new machine?
Another interesting point is, "Mac users now know - absolutely, positively - that Apple can build and market a Mac G4 and sell it at a profit. But they won’t sell you one."
