Motion
Over the weekend Apple announced a brand new app — Motion. A motion graphics application for video, Motion will be instantly recognisable to anyone who has ever used Adobe After Effects in the past.
Motion looks to integrate seamlessly with Apple’s other audio/video tools — Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, Shake and Soundtrack.
At $299, it’s less than half the price of After Effects. I wonder if Adobe are slightly miffed at this announcement, considering the effect Final Cut Pro had on Premiere?

I might be wrong, but I think you’d probably need to buy both Shake and Motion to do what’s possible with After Effects, as I don’t think Motion has the sort of compositing tools that AE has.

Really? In that case, AE is a much cheaper option, considering that Shake retails at over £2000.

Er... forget what I said about Shake then :-/ I guess I’m assuming that, at that price, it doesn’t have quite as many features as After Effects.
It does seem to be a very smart move though as it fills an important gap for an inexpensive motion graphics editor to go alongside Final Cut Pro. Just wish it had been around a few years ago when I did that showreel :)

Aye, a dual 2Ghz G5 might have helped also ;-)
I like the philosophy Apple have regarding third-party software - "if it’s not good enough, we’ll build our own better and faster". They snubbed MS by producing Safari (as a rival to IE) and Keynote (as a rival to Powerpoint), and they’d already snubbed Adobe before, with Final Cut Pro (as a rival to Premiere).

Now all we need is a Apple equivalents of Illustrator and Photoshop. Adobe haven’t been exuding commitment to the Mac platform as of late.
