We're Still Here

You might be wondering why there’s been nothing new to read here. "They just don’t care anymore," you might have thought to yourself. "They’ve given up." Well, we haven’t.

It’s just that, frankly, nothing is going on in the Apple world. There hasn’t been a significant hardware update to the Power Mac or PowerBook lines in over 100 days, and no significant new releases (save the iPod mini) have occurred in the past few months. It also seems, for the most part, that even software releases have been slowing down in the last few weeks, as the winter to spring lull takes place.

I’m sure in the coming weeks we’ll begin to see more new stuff and with it a resurgence of posts here.

In the mean time, here’s what you do: take a screenshot of your OS X desktop right now. Minimize or hide Safari, take a screenshot (Control+Cmd+Shift+3, then paste into graphics editing program and save as a JPG), and post the URL to the comments of this entry.

I just figured there was more to your lives than Apple. That and the lack of interesting Apple news as of late ;)

My highly imaginative desktop ;-)

As you can see, I haven’t changed it from the original Panther desktop, basically because this is so nice. Very soothing (blue is always a good choice of colour) and simple. Ah well...

A nice soothing blue background from somewhere, that is stretched such that the text parts just get clipped off. I used to be all about the dock on the bottom, but I’ve been playing with it on the right top (thanks to Onyx). This is actually great timing, cause my computer is in dire need of a clean install with a very time consuming practice of not just backing up and copying back in my library, but going through and only restoring the essential data parts. I find that taking a screenshot of your dock is the best way to get it right once things are installed again to be running full speed again.

Here’s mine... (The background is Red Rock Canyon, from my holiday in Las Vegas last year). Very boring, centre-bottom dock: I’ve tried other positions, but have always gone bacl to what I’m used to after a few days.

I’m guessing you don’t live in San Francisco then :) Or haven’t heard about the new Apple Store coming to London.

Simple, yet effective.

While that’s true, James, I don’t think it necessarily translates well into weblog entries. "Hey, there’s a new Apple store in San Francisco. And London soon. Yay."

I’m just saying.

Garrett · www · 4 years, 7 months ago

Plus most of the British population live nowhere near London.

One of my own photos. Vanity at its best:

Uggh. Code.

True Garrett, but I doubt it’s beyond your talents to come up with some pithy commentary on how Apple’s recent powerful, playful and boxy extensions are metaphors for the upcoming G5 powered XBox 2.

Or something...

Can’t believe I’m actually posting this, but here goes...

The desktop picture is a photograph that I took of a disused crane on a dock in Rotterdam.

And since I requested, I took a quick shot of my G5 this morning before leaving for work:

Photo is from driving back to Brooklyn one night last Christmas.

Garrett / Adam Tinworth, I’m curious how you get your name up in the top right of the screen on the menubar?

snowman · www · 4 years, 7 months ago

Nice desktop Garrett ;-) Would you, by chance, be using a 23 inch Cinema Display?... Serious hardware-envy if you are...

Phil · www · 4 years, 7 months ago

snowman–it’s fast user switching. In System Preferences -> Accounts -> Login Options at the bottom of the users list. Enable switching.

Phil–20-inch.

Interesting mods there John - are they mostly Konfabulator widgets?

Phil · www · 4 years, 7 months ago

Always late to the party, aren’t I?

Snowman,

As Garrett said, it’s the fast user switching option. The menu underneath also has an entry for "Lorna Tinworth" - my wife.

Ah, nature in my office. On my new Cinema Display.

I haven’t gotten around to straightening out the desktop yet.

Screenshot taken with the beauty of ExposÈ.

(By the way, to take a screenshot, the control key is not necessary. Cmd-Shift-3 is all you need (and it’s been this way for at least 20 years).

I wonder if I can fit many more apps into my dock? Seriously.
