Palm drops the Mac

According to this article at Brighthand, Palm have announced that Palm OS 6 (codenamed Cobalt) will not support the Mac platform —

...PalmSource isn’t developing a Mac version of the Palm Desktop. As the way the PIM apps work has changed significantly, this means Mac users won’t be able to HotSync without third-party software.

This is a blow for Mac-owning Palm PDA users, although it’s stoked those old fires suggesting that Apple may be ready to announce a PDA of it’s own. John Manzione writes on MacNetv2

Apple will deflect this Palm bullet because they will soon introduce a new product that will do for the handheld market what the iPod has done for MP3 players.

A Jonathan Ive-designed PDA? Now I’d love to see that.

As far as I am concerned.. no big loss.

Despite being a Palm user for about 6 years now, I’ve found the Hotsync software for Mac unreliable at best.

It crashes more often than my PC does, and that’s saying something.

I’ve been hoping for an Apple PDA for years now, but about 3 months ago I realised I was probably not going to see that any time soon, and upgraded my Palm Vx to a Sony Clie.

The next PDA I buy will be an Apple one. (What I’m saying here is that if Apple don’t release one, I probably won’t be buying another one for a while) :)

Farewell Palm.

Loyalty isn’t a quality of Windows users. No doubt, that will be Palm’s undoing.

An Apple PDA is all well and good, but an Apple Cellphone would truly be something

Hear .. Hear! I could well use a PDA/Cell-phone combo made by Apple and that syncs with my Mac. This news about Palm comes as no surprise. As Snowman suggests, the software was unreliable and clunky. I dreaded the times that I had to sync my PDA to my machine. Steve Jobs, take note - there is a growing need for an organizer that’s Mac friendly.

PALM is and has been a HUGE SELLOUT! They we a good platform years ago but now they are getting their asses handed to them in so many ways its scary. I use a MAC and have since 84, I owned the Newton, several Apple laptops desktops etc over the years I have had a palm in one way or another since about 95 or 96 and have enjoyed having everything in the "palm" of my hand but now Palm is abandoning us as many do. I hope Steve Jobs announces an Apple PDA that will incorporate some of the palm apps since I own so many but will be stable and have wifi and Bluetooth but since Apple only announces twice a year we are looking at August for any signs of life.

Yes... but at what cost? Everything Apple is way overpriced especially if you live in the UK

I have spent hours and hours over the last few months searching for an international PDA / PHONE combo that is well designed and Mac friendly ... I recognise a glaring omission in the product arena here ... if there’s a rumour Apple will step-up ... I’ll wait ... with my scuffed motorola flip and filofax in hand ...
