Tog on Panther
Bruce Tognazzini has broken his relative silence and published 3 articles on Panther.
- Make Your Mac a Monster Machine
- This is simply a listing of Tog’s favourite third-party shareware add-ons, such as DragThing, ASM and WindowShade X (though I can’t understand how he left out LaunchBar).
- Panther : The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
- This is a more interesting take on some of the user interface decisions Apple made in Panther. Being a founder of Apple’s Human Interface Group, Tog has some interesting opinions.
- Top 9 Reasons the Apple Dock Still Sucks
- The third article, this is a well founded rant about the much-aligned Finder application, presumably because he couldn’t fit it all in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

I don’t really mind the dock, basically because I don’t use it much. A combination of LaunchBar, Command-Tab app switching and FruitMenu does everything I need within the Finder.
He makes a good point though - it’s great for demos and users who don’t demand much from their Mac, but power-users don’t use it much - instead installing third-party add-ons to get around it’s failings.
On another note - Cloven Hoof? Is that your new weblog Tommy? Very nice ;-)

Yeah Cloven Hoof is my site. I finally got around to making one. Still got a big IE 6 CSS layout bug to fix.
But then, there’s always an IE CSS bug to fix. ;)
I don’t agree with most of his complaints about the dock. Also, it would be nice if he showed how it should be done rather than just tearing down the work of others.
His suggestion to add colour to icons in the dock, with labels possibly, wouldn’t work very well unless you had a large range of colours to choose from. Better to do the Mac thing and get some custom icons or make some of your own. ;)
