Panther released on Oct 24th

Apple have set a release date for Panther, the next major release of OS X. The date is set for October 24th at 8.00pm. I wonder why they set such accuracy in the release time - are they expecting people to queue up for hours outside Apple Stores? The pricing is similar to when Jaguar was introduced - $129 for a single license (around £99).

Also, GUIGalaxy have picked up on the striking similarity between the Panther box and posters for the Malcolm X film. Hmm...

People are going to line up before the release, though perhaps not for hours. I’ve seen it happen, and I’ll be in line with them.

Hell, if there was an Apple store near me I’d line up before midnight... and Apple know it. :D

I’ve settle for pre-ordering a 5 license copy on the Apple UK Store. ;)

Amazing. Could you ever imagine people queueing up to buy a new version of Windows? Thought not... ;-)

Windows 5u><0rZ, that’s why. :D

Phil, I assume your tongue is firmly in your cheek, but if it’s not, then I assume you’ve forgotten the hysteria that surrounded Windows 95’s launch back in, er, 1995 ;)

Hmm, you might have to remind me of this auspicious occasion...

Well, if I recall correctly (I didn’t even own a computer then, so I was a little underwhelmed by it all), people camped out until midnight when they could get their grubby little paws on a copy of Win95. When you compare it with Windows 3.1, it’s kind of understandable ;)

midnight to greet long lines of customers."

"XP launch...there were no crowds gathered outside NYC stores, as there were for Windows 95’s midnight release"

It’s a little hard to get original articles about Win95’s launch, rather than articles comparing newer launches with Win95’s.
