Wireless with a 17-inch Powerbook
Well I finally took the plunge and ordered myself an Apple Powerbook. Next week a lovely aluminium 17" Powerbook should turn up at our offices. I couldn’t really resist the deal at the Apple Refurbished Store - it wasn’t the new 1.33 GHz version, but at 35% list price it seemed hard to ignore. I’ve been drooling over Apple’s range of Powerbooks for a while, and thought I’d go for the new 15" when it was announced, but after using a colleagues 17" and seeing the deal on the Refurb Store I went for the big daddy.
When it turns up, the next step is to go wireless, though I’m unsure what kit to buy. I’ve got a Thomson USB ADSL modem, but I fear that’s no good with the Airport Extreme Base Station. Has anyone any experience or advice on choosing an ADSL modem to use with Airport, or even an all-in-one wireless hub and ADSL modem device?...

Cheers Tommy. Thanks for the pointers. I’m also intrigued by all-in-one devices such as this Netgear DG824M :

At £138 it seems to do everything a base station and ethernet modem can, for about £50 less overall. Are there any downsides to an all-in-one device?

The only downside I can think of is that you’d be limited to speeds of 11Mbps because it’s 802.11b. But that’s more than enough for most uses. :)

Cheers Tommy, I’ve ordered one from Amazon, so hopefully it’ll do the job!

I use a Netgear DG814 DSL router which is connected to my AirPort Extreme base station via its WAN port. Having a built-in four port ethernet switch means that anyone without an 802.11b/g card can still plug into my network. DHCP is a dream to use too. You only have to type your connection settings in once: http://www.netgear.co.uk/html/prod_routers_adsl_dg814.htm
However, I’d avoid this model which a friend of mine bought: http://www.netgear.co.uk/html/prod_routers_adsl_dm602.htm
While close in features to the DG814 it lacks a four port switch and doesn’t have port forwarding (which is essential.)
