iMovie underfire

Last week, Neil McIntosh wrote a glowing review of iMovie 3 for Guardian Online. Since the articleís publication, a number of people responded to McIntosh claiming that iMovie was riddled with bugs and was undeserving of the praise he had heaped upon it.

As a result, McIntoshís latest article does some serious back-tracking - ìiMovie 3 appears to be filled with bugs of the worst kind. They are critical.. spread the word that, in its current state, this piece of software simply is not worth the CD-ROM it has been burnt on. ì.

Compare this to some of the remarks McIntosh made last week in ëLive the iLifeí : ìIt’s amazing technology, at an amazing price...Cheap, simple video editing software, and now a cheap, simple means of distribution: it all adds up to something that’s well worth making a fuss about.î

I havenít used iMovie 3 yet so I canít comment on the validity of McIntoshís remarks, but itís worrying that the level of reponse he received compelled him to completely reverse his opinions.

Beware- imovie 3 is a piece of frustrating junk. It is extremely buggy and on some, even very recent, Apple platforms, is virtually useless. Be very cautious about loading i and watch the discussion boards for details. I’ve tried using it, updating it, working around its many faults and believe me, its next to useles and a GIANT step backwards.

Apple should be ashamed of releasing such a piece of junk.

iMovie 3 in its initial form was very buggy. I did run into some problems once I put together a project with over one hundred clips in 3.02. For the most part, though, 3.02 fixes the problems that people are complaining about.

iMovie was alwasy such a great peice of softwatre, it was the highlight of all my movies, getting to go in and add cool effects and titles and music. Now, its an abomination that wont even export correctly. First, when I export to Quicktime, all the sound fades and edits dont export, the sound just export as one never changing clip, intil the music ends at an abrupt stop. Second, I can’t even export to my digital camcorder. A big reason people switched to Apple was because of it’s ease of use, and-for a bit smaller part-because of iMovie. This is gonna make alot of people wonder what the hell Apple is doing releasing this kind of thing (and yes i updtaed to 3.02), and why it hasn’t been fixed STILL....someone need to get the message.

I just spent a bunch of time making a video for my daughter’s 2nd grade class. Now I figure out that the sound is not controllable. I can’t silence the clips where I need the visuals but don’t want the sound. It all seems ok at first but when I export certain clips reset themselves back to normal volume. Ruins the whole thing. Frustrating to say the least. It’s not good to disappoint wenty seven and eight year olds full of anticipation.

Purchased applemac with imovie 2 in May 2002 from PC World
The salesman described the ability and features of the Mac - his sales jargon was describing the features of Imovie 3, which was not available at the time, therefore his sales training was premature as we recently discovered on the internet when reviewing Imovie 3.

The system does not perform the vital tasks needed by me in order to complete a contract for which the machine was specifically purchased, and also promised by the salesman.

My computer cannot produce DVD’s of acceptable quality for watching on tv. It cannot import video from the CD/DVD drive into Imovie for further editing for demonstrating to customer and making any changes they require. It cannot boost sound on quiet clips. It doesn’t have picture in picture as promised and absolutely necessary.

PC World helplines useless - Customer Service person says they don’t do and never will do IMac computers and that the helpline numbers I had were not recognised by them, though these came from the brochure received upon purchase. An extended warranty offer was sent to me through the post listing the same helpline numbers. Upon again contacting the customer advisor section I was informed a few weeks before warranty runs out that I should have been talking to people from Apple helplines. I duly contacted them but they don’t want to know about any problems - are rude and don’t seem to be familiar with the operating system in any way. Their opening lines are that you are advised to purchase their extended warranty before Apple helpline will give you advanced technical assistance.

This very expensive unit was sold as the best vide editing suite available on the market and has dropped in price rapidly - meanwhile I am left with a product which PC World will not exchange, refund, repair even though I brought faults to their attention 1 month after purchase as no Applemac engineer will verify its fault unless I pay £1.50 per minute to talk to an "engineer". There has been no benefit from the one year warranty which has now expired.
